KIT207 Devlog - Week 1, Study 1: Getting Started

In comparison to other UTAS units, KIT207 doesn’t hold back during the first week after break. Assigned to begin the basics of Blender, creating two objects in two weeks, I set out with copious excitement and determination.

The first object to design would be a barrel. Roughly following supplied guides (SirPinkBeard Blender Barrel Tutorial), I shaped the basic body of the barrel from a modified cylinder, and copied a part of the edge to form the hoops. This step was pretty straightforward, and learning the keyboard shortcuts at the same time proved very useful.

Next, I needed to unwrap the model for texturing. Since I stylistically decided to merge the sides of the cylinder into an octagonal prism, I had far fewer sides and edges to undo. The unwrapping and organising process was a bit confusing, and in the end I ended up with a very low number of faces for texturing. After a long time getting textures and designing the final look, I had a completed barrel.

I would begin and complete the second object the following week.

All resources used in the textures were created by me.
